When he left the state in the early 1970s to study at the Art Institute of Chicago, his historical
awareness and love of documentation were already there. Since earning the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Art
Institute of Chicago in 1982, Green's work has shown elements of American culture comparable to that of other master
artists such as Edward Hopper, Elizabeth Catlett, Romare Bearden, and Jacob Lawrence. Recognizing his outstanding and extensive
documentation of Southern culture and traditions in his work, the University of South Carolina in 1996 awarded Green an honorary
doctorate degree in fine art.
